Dover Y2Y announces NH Youth Empowerment Conference

Save the DateDover Youth to Youth is excited to be hosting a youth empowerment conference for NH middle and high school students. The one day training will take place on Friday November 2nd at the Austin 17 House in Brentwood NH. The training is designed for students who want to get involved in preventing the harms of substance misuse in their community. The conference will offer:

  • A basic track for new advocates
  • An opportunity to learn to teach an e-cigarette presentation
  • Info on how to propose and testify to city ordinance raising the age to buy tobacco and e-cigarettes to 21
  • And much more

Dover Y2Y helps make Dover first community in NH to be Tobacco 21

 

The City of Dover is the first city in New Hampshire to be make it illegal for anyone under the age of 21 to purchase, possess or use tobacco products.   Members of Dover Youth to Youth brought forward the resolution and asked  Mayor Karen Weston to sponsor it, which she agreed to. Three members of Dover Youth to Youth, Hannah Martuscello, Olivia Malone and Elsa Rogers spoke on behalf of the ordinance during its public hearing on June 27th 2018. (more…)

Kick Butts Day Celebration and Events in Dover March 21 2018

On Wednesday March 21st, the Dover Police Department’s Youth to Youth program will celebrate Kick Butts Day.  Kick Butts is a national anti-tobacco awareness program, conducted this time of year, where thousands of teens across the country take part in various drug free activities to celebrate being tobacco free.

The main Youth to Youth event will be held on Wednesday evening March 21st in the McConnell Center cafeteria.  On this night, students from Youth to Youth will be holding the Kick Butts Bash and Gear Exchange from 4:30 – 6:30 pm.  The evening will feature student artwork, an ice cream buffet, and a chance to participate in the Gear Exchange. New Hampshire Advocacy & Policy Change Youth Empoweremnt Conference

Due to the nor’easter during the originally scheduled event we were forced to postpone. The conference will now be a one day event for youth and adults held on Friday April 13, 2018.

General Info:

Two-day conference designed for those interested in, or currently active in, involving youth in the drug prevention process. The training is designed to provide practical skills, resources and information that can be put to immediate use by adults and their youth collaborators. Day one available to adults only. Day two is designed for adults – and the adults may bring up to 8 youth leaders from their communities or program (you may request permission to bring a larger group of youth).

In addition to great training, attendees will receive:

  • Handouts, templates and scripts that you may reuse – including PSA scripts that can be recorded locally.
  • A lesson plan and PowerPoint for teaching Public Speaking Skills and an E-cigarette-Vaping presentation – that you are welcome to use in your own community.
  • A flash drive with a variety of resources related to the training.
  • Info on specific opportunities for youth to collaborate on statewide action over the following year by, (1) supporting an existing state campaign in their local area; and/or, (2) participating in a statewide action project; and/or, (3) participating in a state legislative proposal.
  • If you own the Youth Empowerment Toolkit you may bring the Toolkit and the flash drive to the conference and it will be updated with new material and the flash drive will be upgraded right there on the spot.

  • $15 per person

Dover Y2Y is offering 2 more webinars in the 2017-2018 Series

Working Effectively with the Press

Tuesday, January 30th 2018 at 3 pm ET

This webinar is designed to provide participants with a foundation and framework for youth, their adult advisers and the coalition generally to collaborate with the mass media and press to get their message out. The webinar will address the process of training youth to refine their message and get it out through the press and media. This will include developing talking points and sound bites, teaching youth to prepare a press release, developing media contacts, preparing a letter to the editor, and preparing to be interviewed by a reporter. The webinar will also provide tips and a step-by-step process for holding a press conference and preparing youth to answer 6 common types of questions. 2nd Annual Day of Action for Dover Y2Y January 15th

Students from Dover Youth to Youth and surrounding communities will participate in the second annual Day of Action in Dover on January 15th.  Activities will include:  making radio PSA’s, retail responsibility projects, sticker shock, legislative planning, and other projects out in the community.   Senator David Watters will also be joining us to discuss upcoming legislation that Y2Y is working on.
